First Session Follow-Up

  1. My favorite tool was Facebook - usually use for personal but recently set up business page eLearning ID. Would like to use twitter more eLearningID as well.

    In the context of my current project I could see using a blog to showcase testimonials, ways that business professionals put theory into practice,and experts in the field.

    A colleague of mine introduced me to http://www.wordle.net/create today - it might be fun to combine a blog or wiki with a wordle to get a visual of the words being used. Also good for brainstorming sessions.

  2. My favorite tool for personal use is Facebook. For business though, I prefer the use of Blogs/Wikis.

    I see many opportunities for the use of blogs and wikis. Since my SMEs are dispersed across the US, using a wiki for SME review of might be something that I'd like to try. We are also starting to use blogs to push training out to our audience. Since my audience is very much into the social media, this has proven to be very effective way to disperse training quickly-particularly on time sensitive topics.

As I think I said, I love Facebook and Twitter for different reasons, and it's all kind of a lesson, I think, in mixing up tools to give learners a chance to explore and use their favorites, too. It often really comes down to personal preference: I have to keep up because of my work, but I find it a chore to spend time in LinkedIn. Sabina: RE Wordle-- I agree.I find some of them fascinating, especially results from things like speeches and brainstorming. -- JB

I see a blog as an opportunity to share daily reminders regarding service, sales, etc., amongst multiple clients and audiences with an opportunity for the audience/followers to comments and add to the information chain. The challenge, I feel, is in always keeping it fresh, lively, visually interesting, etc. It seems like it would take a lot of time for the upkeep. - KE

  5. Yes, content creation is a challenge. I don't know whether I mentioned this last week, but many organizations having good luck with social media for learning have appointed ambassadors/deputies to help with generating fresh content.

  6. The biggest challenge is making the shift from standard training to incorporating social media tools into the classroom. To help ge to this shift is educating the designers and instructors on how to effectively utilize the tools in the design of the course as well as in the delivery.

  8. My favorite tool is Facebook because it is a tool that is so easy and so popular.

    The problem with social tools is similiar to the problem trainers are seeing with mobile apps. People see mobile apps becoming popular and decide they want one for training without knowing what it takes to be successful. Social tools are similiar because people see Facebook being popular and say, we need one. However, you should not use something because is it popular, use it because it fits what you need.

  9. Yes, Charles, agreed. Someone in the last session I taught said the local schools were giving kids iPads with no discussion of how to use them to support learning. It's maddening the time and money wasted on poorly-implemented decisions.

  10. I am a Facebook user; I have not authored Blogs or Wiki (other than sharing documents using Google). I found learning more about Wiki and applying appropriately my favorite. I have great ideas and need help implementing them. I think Wiki would assist me between meetings to keep tasks/decisions moving in development stages. There would have to be ground rules and a brief training available to those who need.
